I can't believe what a major pain in the arse these things are. I tried all the different captchas built into PHPBB3 and all of them did not stop the problem.
The solution? Going to a question and answer based system that is obscure enough so the bot can't google it and get the answer, but not too obscure for a human. So far gone three days without a pornographic posting on the site....
