Virtual server

Now that I am a Microsoft MAPS partner, I have all the server and workstation software I can shake my hat at.

So I am going to build myself a new server that runs Server 2012 with Exchange 2013. But I also want to run PHP and MySQL 64 bit. I also have data that I want to transfer from my old server to the new one, to see if it all works.

So what better way to try it all out without having to buy a load of new expensive equipment than doing it virtually first to ensure it all hangs together?
My workstation at home has enough ooooomph to handle it although I am in the process of upgrading the RAM from 32 to 64Gb as Windows and Exchange server want as much RAM as you can throw at it. I also need a lot of disk space for the virtual drives, so a 2Tb SATA III is also on its way.

Once I have these popped in, I'll see how it all goes. I am going to assume that the MS virtualisation software won't let me do it and I will have to use the free version of Oracle, as I did have to with Windows 8....

Microsoft do make me chuckle sometimes.

I wonder if it would be easier to join the new server to the existing domain and just export the old mailboxes to PST files and then import them onto the new box...

Have to have Exchange 2007 updated to SP3 and Rollup 10 (These are both available)
and
Exchange 2013 has to have CU1 installed (Cumulative Update 1) Expected before end of Q1

Then and only then can you have both co-existing on the same domain/forest and be able to migrate

Note that Outlook versions prior to "2003" will not work with Exchange 2013

Okay, have got Windows 2012 installed and configured as a domain controller. Have added a user account for myself and have also configured a virtual workstation running Windows 8 Professional and have successfully joined it to the domain.

Trying to install Exchange 2013 and have just run across several small niggles...

Readiness checks show that I need the following;
Microsoft Unified Communications Managed API 4.0, Core Runtime 64-bit
Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs - Version 2.0 - Downloaded and Installed
Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs - Version 2.0 - Service Pack 1 - Downloaded and Installed

Retried the readiness checker and...

Now just a warning that installing Exchange on a domain controller will elevate the permissions for Exchange Trusted Subsystem to domain administrators and that setup will use /PrepareAD and then no Exchange 2010 servers will be able to be installed.

So almost one hour to install Microsoft Exchange server 2013 onto Windows server 2012

Added a mailbox for my domain account and am going to fire up Windows 8 and create an Outlook profile to it.
