No error recorded by Windows update.just keep getting offered it time and again.
Have just tried this - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982

Another thing to try I have seen is to remove everything that is .NET Framework 4 via "Programs and Features" in the Control Panel and let Windows update sort it out...

Lets see what the above does first shall we?

No good. Still happening.

Now I am removing all .NET Framework 4 software from the computer. Will reboot and then see what Windows update comes up with.

All righty then. After the obligatory reboot once the .NET 4 stuff was removed. I checked for updates.

First one for Windows defender and that only, KB915597
No reboot required.
Then after another update availability check, just this one, .NET Framework 4 Client Profile KB982670
No reboot required.
Checked for more updates...
9 found
KB2604121 - Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4
KB2656351 - Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4
KB2729449 - Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4
KB2737019 - Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4
KB2742595 - Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4
KB2789642 - Security update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4
KB2468871 - Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4
KB2533523 - Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4
KB2600217 - Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4

202.5Mb

Installing as I type...

All done, no reboot required. A further check for updates reveals that none are needed!

Problem solved.
