Unable to install an HP CP4005 PCL6 printer which is installed on a Windows 2003 server and shared across the network.
Whether I use the normal installation method or use the AD browse and connect attempt, I get the above error.
I do not want to install it as a local printer, creating a new port pointing to the server. I want the print queue to reside on the server. That is why it is a "file and print" server...
Anyhow I managed to overcome the problem today on a new Windows 7 workstation in the following manner:
Find a 64 bit driver for the printer in question
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Te ... lj-54503-1
Download and save it to the Windows 7 workstation.
Run the file
A new window will come up, asking you to install the printer itself. Do not install the printer! There is a link which will open an explorer window showing the driver files.
Click it, and from the explorer window, copy the path to the clipboard
Use the add printer wizard and click the appropriate printer from the list
Windows will search for a driver, including using Windows Update.
When it fails, it asks you if you have a path to appropriate drivers.
Paste the path to the local driver files you got earlier
After a few moments, the printer will be installed and you should be able to print a test page.
Voila!
